Appleby lies in a loop of the river Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon, just a few miles away. The town is an ideal centre for tourists of all types and is the starting point for many dozens of walks over the surrounding fell countryside. Penrith is a welcoming market town with beautiful red sandstone buildings, fascinating yards and alleyways to discover, and pleasant open spaces.
The Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North Pennines are close by. A little further afield, but well within reach for a day trip, are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall, stretching from Carlisle to Newcastle.
The Solway estuary and coast are also a short drive away with new maritime attractions developing in Maryport and Whitehaven. Of special interest to fly fishers is our one mile of private double bank fishing for brown trout on the River Lyvennet - fishing is reserved exclusively for our guests. Good Food and a friendly welcome are guaranteed at the local White Horse Inn, Kings Meaburn. Other interesting websites you may like to visit:-
